[Seoul] Mongchon Dakgalbi

Updated: Nov 6

✔ Restaurant:

Mongchon Dakgalbi (몽촌 닭갈비)

Dakgalbi is one of the favorite dishes among foreign tourists. It is a dish where pieces of chicken are placed on a large pan and stir fried with various vegetables and a spicy, slightly sweet sauce. In Mongchon Dakgalbi, there is the usual dakgalbi, but also they have their signature Hanbang Dakgalbi.

Mongchon Dakgalbi is located near Seokchon Lake in Songpa-gu. It is an 11 minute walk from Exit 10 of Jamsil Station where Line 2 and Line 8 intersect. Alternatively, it is a 14 minute walk from Exit 1 of Seokchon Station where Line 8 and Line 9 intersect. The Interior has a vintage Korea vibe with a look of a traditional herbal medicine shop.

✔ Menu:

On the menu, there are two types of dakgalbi. One is similar to the regular spicy dakgalbi, and the other is the hanbang dakgalbi, which is herbal dakgalbi. Both dishes uses the same base ingredients, but the sauce are different. There is topping menu as well where you can add more ingredients which are already included in the dish or add new ingredients such as cheese or udon noodles, which are not included in the dish. There is a side menu called kid’s samgyetang porridge for kids who can't eat spicy food.

✔ Food:

We ordered their signature hanbang dakgalbi. The hanbang dakgalbi has a distinct herbal aroma and tastes somewhat like a mixture between jjimdak and dakgalbi. Jjimdak is one of my favorite dishes made with a chicken braised in soy sauce. This might be the reason why I found it so delicious.

✔ How to eat:

The ingredients are brought to you on the table as the cooking is done right on the table pan. The staff will handle the cooking by checking the timer that they bring out with the food. And once it's ready to eat, the staff will let you know when to eat.

You can dip the chicken in the sauce or eat it as it is. Alternatively, you can wrap the chicken and vegetable in a perilla leaf for a delicious bite. If you need more side dishes, there is a self-service bar, but be sure to take only one you can eat.

When you've eaten most of the dakgalbi and have some leftovers like this. You can order fried rice. Fried rice is always a hit, so I highly recommend it.

There used to be a bit of wait, but the lines have gotten much longer after it was featured on the TV show. Try to arrive before opening time or use the Catch Table Global app to get on the waiting list.
