This time I would like to introduce you to gomtang, a traditional Korean beef soup. Gomtang, also known as gomgook, has been enjoyed by Koreans for a long time. It is a similar to seolleongtang Gomtang is made by shimmering beef. It is nutritious and has a rich flavor. Traditionally considered restorative dish for royalty. Today, I will introduce you to the restaurant 1974 Biraeok.



Biraeok originated in Daejeon, and now has four locations in Seoul. Search on Naver Map to find the nearest one. The location I visited is in Songpa-gu. It is about a 10 minute walk from Jamsil Station where Line 2 and Line 8 intersect.


✔ Menu:



The menu offers a variety of dishes including gomtang, yukhoe (raw beef) and sooyuk (boiled beef). Sooyuk is typically for a large group and yukhoe is a bit pricey, so I opted for gomtang since I was dining alone. There are two types of gomtang spicy or clear. I chose the clear gomtang.


✔ Food:



The soup itself was very clean tasting and the meat was delicious. Gomtang is not meant to be an exciting dish, but is a hearty and simple meal. Personally, I really like gomtang and eat it often. I think you'll enjoy it too.


✔ How to eat:



Inside the soup, there is dangmyeon (glass noodles). You can eat the noodle first, then eat the soup with rice or put the rice into the soup and eat them together.


The unique feature of this restaurant is that they give you an empty bowl with sesame oil inside. You can put rice into this bowl, cut some spicy kimchi with scissors, and some meat from the soup and mix it all together with seaweed and sauce like bibimbap. I tried this, and it was delicious, although the kimchi was very spicy. So I recommend adding just a bit.
